The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is a 16-core mainstream desktop processor from AMD, which is manufactured at TSMC in an improved 7 nm process. Thanks to the modern production technology and the high computing power per clock (IPC), the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X sets new records for mainstream processors in many benchmarks. It is based on the new Zen 3 CPU cores (Vermeer) from AMD and was presented in the 4th quarter of 2020.

In addition to higher clock frequencies, AMD was able to further increase the computing power per clock compared to the previous architecture (Zen 2). This is currently even higher than the new Intel Tiger Lake processors. The Intel Tiger Lake processors are based on a new Intel architecture, the older processors still had their origins in the outdated Sandy Lake architecture. Nevertheless, the new Ryzen 5xxx processors are above the new hopes from Intel.

The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X supports the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X with a full 64 MB Level 3 cache. In addition, DDR4 memory up to DDR4-3200 is supported. Per D.O.C.P. Profile or manual overclocking of the main memory, higher frequencies are also possible. As before, the processor connects the RAM to the CPU via two channels; AMD specifies a maximum capacity of 128 GB. PCIe 4.0 devices such as dedicated graphics cards or fast M.2 SSDs can be connected via 20 CPU lines.

Like all Zen desktop processors, the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X does not have integrated graphics (iGPU). AMD has released the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X for overclocking (open multiplier), but not very much experience is available about the clock frequency. Since it is a 16 core processor, one can assume that the maximum clock can only be increased by a few 100 Mhz before the power consumption increases drastically.
