In our ranking of the best AMD desktop processors for the year 2026, we included three AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors for the Enthusiast Socket TRX4, with the remaining places all going to AMD's mainstream platform, which is built on the AM4 socket. Best AMD processors for socket AM4 and TRX4

AMD's mainstream Socket AM4 has been around for many years now. With the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors, AMD released desktop processors for socket AM4 without integrated graphics in 2020. Only the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G and the smaller AMD Ryzen 5 5600G brought the latest Ryzen generation with iGPU to the AM4 socket. That was in the second quarter of 2021.

The currently best AMD desktop processor is the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X with 64 CPU cores. Like the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X and the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X, this AMD processor fits into the TRX4 socket and is intended for professional users. The strengths of this platform are the number of cores (the socket AM4 supports a maximum of 16 CPU cores) and a doubling of the memory channels to a total of 4.
