Description of the processor

The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 is a CPU with 12 CPU cores (24 threads) for AMDs current mainstream socket AM5. 12 CPU cores of the same size from the Zen4 architecture are used; a combination of CPU cores of different sizes is not used here.

The base clock frequency of the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 is 3.7 GHz. In Turbo mode, this clock frequency can be increased to up to 5.4 GHz. When all CPU cores are fully utilized, 4.7 GHz is still possible. The processors internal graphics (iGPU) only has two execution units that have 128 texture shaders. The graphics performance is relatively low due to the low number of shaders and is therefore not suitable for modern computer games.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 can connect up to 128 GB of RAM, the type used is DDR5-5200. Using AMDs EXPO technology, the RAM can be overclocked to higher clock frequencies fully automatically, even if AMD does not guarantee higher frequencies. DDR5-6000 is often cited as the sweet spot for the AMD Ryzen 7000 processors. In dual channel, a maximum of 83.2 GB/s memory bandwidth is possible with DDR5-5200.

External devices can be connected via 24 PCIe 5.0 lines. This means that not only very fast graphics cards can be addressed, but also fast M.2 SSDs. The TDP of the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 is 65 watts, the processor requires 88 watts under full load. AMD has released the TDP to 170 watts, but you cant get much more performance out of the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 with massive energy consumption.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 is manufactured using a 5 nm process. The AMD Ryzen 7000 processors for the AM5 socket are relatively efficient and actually always clearly beat their competitors from Intel in the form of the Intel Core i Gen 13/14 processors.
