Monero Hashrate kH/s

The crypto currency Monero has been using the RandomX algorithm since November 2019. This PoW (proof of work) algorithm can only efficiently be calculated using a processor (CPU) or a graphics card (GPU). The CryptoNight algorithm was used for Monero until November 2019, but it could be calculated using ASICs. RandomX benefits from a high number of CPU cores, cache and a fast connection of the memory via as many memory channels as possible. Tested with XMRig v6.x under the operation system HiveOS.

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900X is a 12 core processor (24 threads). It is the successor to the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, which is currently one of the most popular processors for the upscale mainstream PC. Since it is based on the same CPU design as the 16-core processors from AMD (e.g. AMD Ryzen 9 5950X), the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X also has a 64 MB level 3 cache.

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900X is manufactured in an improved 7 nm manufacturing process at TSMC. The modern 7 nm production enables high clock frequencies with a lower energy consumption of the CPU. The Ryzen 5xxx processors have the new Zen-3 CPU core design from AMD, which has an even higher computing power per clock (IPC) compared to the already fast predecessor architecture. In addition, AMD was able to increase the clock frequencies of the Ryzen 5xxx processors again, so that they achieve a total performance gain of 12-20 percent compared to the previous years models.

The Ryzen 5xxx desktop processors can quickly connect external devices such as graphics cards or fast data carriers such as an M.2 SSD to the processor. PCIe 4.0 SSDs benefit greatly from twice the bandwidth (compared to PCIe 3.0), as they are only connected to the CPU with 4 lines. While the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0 M.2 SSDs is a maximum of 4 GB / s, PCIe 4.0 SSDs can transfer data at up to 8 GB / s.

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900X has an open multiplier and can be overclocked relatively easily. However, the energy consumption of a CPU increases sharply when overclocking, which is of course even more pronounced with a 16-core processor. Although the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X is only shown with a TDP of 105 watts, in reality the power consumption ex works is well over 105 watts. Therefore, good air or even water cooling is recommended.
