Description of the processor

The Intel Core i7-11700 is an 8-core desktop processor from Intel. It clocks its cores with 2.5 GHz in the base, but can dynamically adjust its clock frequency to the system load. Then in the so-called turbo mode up to 3.8 GHz are possible with load on all CPU cores. The processor can clock a single core at up to 4.9 GHz.

The processor supports Intel Hyper-Threading Technology and can process up to 16 threads in parallel. It does not have a free multiplier and therefore cannot be overclocked. It fits into the LGA 1200 socket and has a TDP of 65 watts. In real operation, however, the energy consumption is significantly higher. The processor can consume up to 224 watts for just under 1 minute.

The Intel UHD Graphics 750 is used as the internal graphics (iGPU) in the Intel Core i7-11700. This is not yet based on Intels new Intel Xe graphics architecture. In addition, the UHD Graphics 750 only has 32 execution units with a maximum clock rate of 1.3 GHz. In theory, thats enough for very simple games, the raw performance is around 0.67 TFLOPS with single accuracy (FP32).

The Intel Core i7-11700 is based on Intels "Rocket Lake S" architecture, which, however, has a backport of 10 nm to 14 nm. Originally, these processors were supposed to be manufactured in 10 nm. However, due to production problems and bottlenecks, Intel deviated from this and still manufactured the "Rocket Lake S" CPUs in 10 nm. Therefore these are limited to 8 cores, while the previous architecture (10th Gen) could fall back on up to ten CPU cores.

After all, Intel has succeeded in increasing the IPC (raw performance per clock) of the processors by 10-15 percent. Intel was also unable to improve on the cache. This remains unchanged at only 16 MB, while the new AMD processors such as the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X can fall back on 32 MB cache.
