Description of the processor

The Intel Core i7-6700K is a 6th generation quad-core processor from Intels Skylake lineup that supports hyperthreading as well as being overclockable.

The base clock of the Intel Core i7-6700K is 4.00 gigahertz and can be increased to 4.20 gigahertz in turbo mode, but only when one of the 4 cores is utilized. If 2 or more cores are utilized, the base clock of 4.00 Gigahertz is maintained.

The integrated graphics unit "Intel HD Graphics 530" has a base clock of 0.35 Gigahertz. The turbo mode is activated when the graphics unit is fully loaded, which increases the clock up to 1.15 gigahertz. The Intel HD Graphics 530 is already the ninth generation of Intels graphics units, has 24 AE (execution units) and supports DirectX version 12.0 as well as the control of up to 3 displays.

In contrast to the Intel i7 processors from the seventh generation onwards, the Intel Core i7-6700K doesnt yet support the decoding of video files with HEVC codec (h.265) and 10bit in hardware, only 8bit material can be played back and decoded as well as encoded in hardware without any problems. All other codecs like h.264, VP8, VP9, VC-1 and AVC can be decoded in hardware.

The Intel Core i7-6700K officially supports DDR4 working memory modules with a clock of up to 2133 megahertz and uses a maximum of 2 memory channels. ECC memory, i.e. working memory with automatic error correction, is not supported by the processor.

The Intel Core i7-6700K is manufactured in a 14nm process and has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 45 watts. Thus, it is also clear that the processor should be installed in full PCs and not in notebooks or too small cases with insufficient cooling.

The Intel Core i7-6700K was released in the third quarter of 2015.
