News and articles for the AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT

Description of the processor

With the AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT, shortly before the presentation of the Zen 3 processors, AMD dares to try a slightly optimized new edition of some Ryzen 3xxx processors. The AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT has 8 cores and can process up to 16 threads simultaneously. In addition to PC gaming, it is therefore also suitable for computationally intensive applications such as video editing.

The processors base clock is a high 4.2 GHz. If several CPU cores are used to full capacity, the AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT can clock them with up to 4.5 GHz. If only one CPU core is used, even 4.7 GHz are possible. In order for these high clock frequencies to be possible, AMD is increasing the TDP budget from 65 to 105 watts. Because even if the AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT is already manufactured in 7 nm, high clock frequencies require a lot of energy and thus also generate a lot of waste heat.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT can handle up to 128 GB of RAM, the internal memory controller supports memory up to the DDR4-3200 standard. Higher clock frequencies of the main memory are also possible via overclocking. Up to DDR4-3600 is almost always possible. Since this is about overclocking the main memory, an Intel XMP or AMD D.O.C.P. Profile can be used. This profile regulates the setting of the main memory according to the manufacturers specifications.

The new PCIe 4.0 standard for connecting an M.2 SSD (PCIe 4.0 x4) is supported by the AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT. This enables transfer speeds of up to 5 GB per second when reading and writing data to or from an SSD. This depends on the size and features of the M.2 SSD.

However, there is still no real benefit from PCIe 4.0 when it comes to connecting modern graphics cards. Only the new RDNA2 graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIAs Ampere GPUs will support PCIe 4.0.
