The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the most popular gaming CPU in 2025. There are several reasons for this: First, AMD has changed the positioning of the 3D V-Cache stack, resulting in better cooling of the CPU cores. As with all Zen 5 processors, AMD has also increased the clock speeds in the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D now reaches up to 5.25 GHz in Turbo mode.

In addition, the AMD EXPO, AMD PBO, and AMD Precision Boost overclocking features are supported. Although the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D only has 8 equally sized CPU cores, this is perfectly sufficient for gaming. The processor is very economical in games thanks to its large 96 MB Level 3 cache. An additional 8 MB is available as Level 2 cache.

The eight CPU cores of the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D support simultaneous multithreading, resulting in 16 logical processors.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D also features an iGPU (integrated graphics unit), but the AMD Radeon Graphics is only equipped with two execution units (128 texture shaders) and is very slow. It is primarily used for video playback and debugging in case of problems.

Officially, 192 GB of DDR5-5600 memory is supported, but the sweet spot is DDR5-6400. RAM overclocking can be easily achieved via AMD EXPO. External devices such as a dedicated graphics card or fast M.2 SSDs can be accessed via the PCIe interface with the latest 5.0 standard and up to 24 lines, with a total bandwidth of 94.5 GB per second.

The TDP of the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a low 120 watts, partly due to the number of cores. The 4 nm processor is also quite energy-efficient. Its predecessor (the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D) was even more energy-efficient due to its lower clock speed, but AMD sacrificed some efficiency to further increase performance, especially in single-core scenarios.
