Description of the processor

The AMD Athlon 3000G is based on the 2nd generation of the Zen design from AMD. The Zen + processors are manufactured in 12 nm. The AMD Athlon 3000G uses the Picasso design, which, in contrast to the normal Ryzen 3/5/7 processors, has an integrated graphics unit. Therefore, the processor is ideal for entry-level PC systems and small servers, as no external graphics card is required here.

With a starting price of only 49 USD, it is not only one of the cheapest processors in this segment, but also makes Intel massively competitive for 2-cores plus Hyper-Threading segment. The internal graphics unit of the AMD Athlon 3000G is faster than the competition, even if, with the AMD Radeon Vega 3, only the smallest expansion stage with 3 execution units and 192 shaders is used. AMD offers the internal graphics unit in other processors with up to 10 execution units.

The AMD Athlon 3000G clocks its 2 cores with 3.5 GHz, but the processor has to do without a turbo mode. At least the Hyper-Threading Technology is supported. The AMD Athlon 3000G thus offers the operating system 4 logical processors. The processor has a TDP of 35 watts. This means that it can be passively cooled with good cooling solutions. With a good air cooler, higher clock frequencies of the CPU and also the GPU are possible.

The AMD Athlon 3000G has 2 memory channels and can operate DDR4-2666 memory in dual-channel mode. Higher memory frequencies are unofficially possible and accelerate the iGPU of the processor, which is very dependent on fast main memory.

The AMD Athlon 3000G was presented in the 4th quarter of 2019. Its level 3 cache is 4 megabytes. Simple virtualization is supported. The extended virtualization functions are reserved for the larger Ryzen 3/5 and 7 processors.
