Description of the processor

The Intel Core i3-1215U is a notebook processor based on Intels "Alder Lake U" architecture. It uses a hybrid core layout and is equipped with 2 large P cores (Golden Cove) and 4 smaller and more economical E cores (Gracemont). The hybrid layout is called big.LITTLE and combines different CPU architectures (CPU cores).

The advantage of a hybrid core structure is that the CPU is significantly more economical than a processor with CPU cores of the same size in partial load scenarios, in which a processor is often found in private use. Background tasks are handled by the smaller and more efficient CPU cores, while the larger CPU cores are put to sleep. If maximum performance is required, the differently sized CPU cores can also operate in a network.

The clock frequency of the P cores of the Intel Core i3-1215U is a low 1.2 GHz, but up to 4.4 GHz are possible in turbo mode. The smaller E cores only clock at 0.9 GHz (turbo mode 3.3 GHz).

With the Intel Iris Xe 64, the Intel Core i3-1215U has a fairly fast integrated graphics unit, also called iGPU. With a computing power of over 1 TFLOP/s, older games can also be played. All modern video codecs are supported for video playback, including the newer AV1 codec. This enables the processor to play videos with a very low processor load and low energy consumption.

Up to 64 GB of RAM can be connected to the Intel Core i3-1215U. Both older DDR4 / LPDDR4 modules and newer DDR5 / LPDDR5 modules are supported. The maximum memory bandwidth when using two memory channels is 76.8 GB/s with DDR5-4800 memory.

External devices such as an additional graphics card or a fast M.2 SSD can be connected via PCIe 4.0 with up to 28 lines (depending on the mainboard chipset).
