Description of the processor

With the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G, AMD releases an 8-core processor with integrated AMD Vega graphics. It can process 16 threads and is more or less identical to the AMD Ryzen 7 3700, which does not have an iGPU, but has significantly more L3 cache (32 MB compared to 8 MB).

The AMD Ryzen 7 4700G is thus based on the Zen2 technology, which is installed in all Ryzen 3xxx. The naming would suggest that this processor is already a Ryzen 3xxx, but that is not true.

Nevertheless, the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G has been long awaited by fans, because the iGPU makes it easy to create a mini-gaming PC with this processor. You can find a good tutorial on this at Elefacts, for example: AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G in an ASRock DeskMini A300.

The AMD Vega iGPU is based on AMDs GCN 5.1 architecture and not yet on the new RDNA or even RDNA2 architecture. The clock frequency of the AMD Radeon 8 Graphics is a whopping 2.1 GHz, which is mainly due to the new 7 nm manufacturing. The iGPU alone can thus consume up to 50 watts of energy. To make this possible, the CPU and GPU part of the processor share a common TDP budget of 65 watts, which can also be exceeded under certain conditions.

The AMD Ryzen 7 4700G fits into AMDs Socket AM4 and can connect up to 64 GB of working memory. DDR4-3200 working memory is supported in dual-channel mode. This can achieve transfer rates of just under 50 GB per second, and the Level 3 cache reaches up to 600 GB per second. Since the iGPU uses the working memory or a part of it as graphics memory, you should make sure to install at least two memory modules when building a computer.
