Intel Core i5-2500 vs Intel Core i5-6500

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-6500 is based on the Skylake S architecture and is manufactured using the 14 nm fabrication process.

This mainstream desktop processor features four cores and four threads. Compared to the Intel Core i5-2500, it offers significantly higher performance: single-core performance is over 20 percent better, and multi-core performance is over 30 percent better.

Its integrated Intel HD Graphics 530, PCIe 3.0 support, and a maximum memory bandwidth of 34 GB/s make it a more powerful choice for everyday tasks and gaming. The Intel Core i5-2500, based on the older Sandy Bridge S architecture, is manufactured using the 32 nm fabrication process.

This processor, also designed for the mainstream market, has four cores and four threads. Although it offers solid performance for its generation, it clearly lags behind the Intel Core i5-6500 in benchmarks. Its integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 is less potent, and support for PCIe 2.0 and a maximum memory bandwidth of 21 GB/s characterize an older platform.

However, for simple office applications and media playback, it remains an extremely cost-effective option. In gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i5-6500 surpasses the Intel Core i5-2500 thanks to its more modern architecture, potentially higher clock frequencies, and superior integrated graphics performance.

The improved IPC of the Skylake S architecture is advantageous here. Without specific TDP values, a direct comparison of power consumption is difficult, but the 14 nm process tends to be more energy-efficient. Both processors are primarily available on the used market today. The Intel Core i5-6500 offers a better price-performance ratio for more demanding use, while the Intel Core i5-2500 provides an extremely inexpensive basis for basic tasks.
