V-Ray CPU-Render Benchmark

V-Ray is a 3D rendering software from the manufacturer Chaos for designers and artists. Unlike many other render engines, V-Ray is capable of so-called hybrid rendering, in which the CPU and GPU work together at the same time.

However, the CPU benchmark we used (CPU Render Mode) only uses the system's processor. The working memory used plays a major role in the V-Ray benchmark. For our benchmarks we use the fastest RAM standard approved by the manufacturer (without overclocking).

Due to the high compatibility of V-Ray (including Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, SketchUp, Unreal Engine and Blender), it is a frequently used software. With V-Ray, for example, photorealistic images can be rendered that laypeople cannot distinguish from normal photos.

Blender 3.1 Benchmark

In the Blender Benchmark 3.1, the scenes "monster", "junkshop" and "classroom" are rendered and the time required by the system is measured. In our benchmark we test the CPU and not the graphics card. Blender 3.1 was presented as a standalone version in March 2022.

Blender 2.81 (bmw27)

Blender is a free 3D graphics software for rendering (creating) 3D bodies, which can also be textured and animated in the software. The Blender benchmark creates predefined scenes and measures the time (s) required for the entire scene. The shorter the time required, the better. We selected bmw27 as the benchmark scene.

If you compare the Intel Core i7-10750H with the Apple M1, the first thing you notice is that the core architecture is completely different. The Intel Core i7-10750H is a conventional processor with 6 cores of the same size, whereas the Apple M1 has a so-called hybrid architecture (big.LITTLE), in which the 8 cores are divided into 4 powerful and 4 energy-saving cores. As a result, the Apple M1 only uses the energy-saving cores for simple tasks and thus consumes significantly less electricity.

The Intel Core i7-10750H was released in the second quarter of 2020 and is based on the Comet Lake architecture manufactured using the 14 nanometer process. The Apple M1, on the other hand, was released in the fourth quarter of 2020 and is already manufactured using the 5 nanometer process. That is another reason why the Apple M1 is much more energy efficient than the comparison processor, the Intel Core i7-10750H. The TDP of the Intel Core i7-10750H with 45W is three times as high as that of the Apple M1, where it is only 15 watts.

If you now also look at the benchmarks of the processors, you can see that the Intel Core i7-10750H also lags behind the Apple M1 here. Depending on the benchmark, the single-core performance of the Intel Core i7-10750H is 20-30% behind the Apple M1. In the multi-core performance, the lead of the Apple M1 then shrinks to 5-20%.

However, there is a clear difference in performance when it comes to graphics performance. The Intel UHD Graphics 630 graphics integrated in the Intel Core i7-10750H clocks at up to 1.15 gigahertz and has an FP32 processing power of 442 GigaFLOPS. The graphics integrated in the Apple M1, on the other hand, clocks at up to 3.20 gigahertz and here the FP32 computing power is more than five times as high with 2600 GigaFLOPS.
