Apple M1 Max (32-GPU) vs Apple M4 (10-CPU)

Last updated:
The Apple M1 Max (32-GPU) was introduced in 2021 and is aimed at professional users who require extreme graphics performance and high memory bandwidth.

It is based on the M1 architecture and is manufactured using the 5nm process. This processor features a powerful 32-core GPU and a 28 MB Level-2 cache. With a maximum memory bandwidth of 410 GB/s, it offers an excellent platform for graphics-intensive tasks and also enables good AI performance. In benchmarks, it shows very solid multi-core performance for its generation, while single-core performance is good.

For gaming scenarios, it is significantly better suited due to its superior GPU and high bandwidth. Its power consumption is designed for maximum performance. Systems with this chip often offer good value for money for professional graphics work. The Apple M4 (10-CPU) was introduced in 2024 and targets efficient and powerful systems for a broader user base, with a focus on CPU performance and AI capabilities.

It is based on the M4 architecture and is manufactured using the more advanced 3nm process. This processor features 10 CPU cores and a 20 MB Level-2 cache, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 120 GB/s. In benchmarks, the Apple M4 (10-CPU) demonstrates significantly higher single-core performance and improved multi-core performance in newer tests compared to the Apple M1 Max (32-GPU).

Its 10-core graphics are designed for less demanding games. Thanks to the 3nm process, it offers excellent energy efficiency and is ideal for mobile devices. As the newest chip, it can be found in more recent, often higher-priced devices.
