Apple A14 Bionic vs Apple M1

Last updated:
The Apple A14 Bionic and the Apple M1 were both introduced at the end of 2020.

The A14 Bionic is designed for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, while the M1 is for notebooks and desktop computers that require higher computing power. Both are manufactured by Apple using the 5 nm process. The Apple A14 Bionic (A14 Firestorm/Icestorm) features a 6-core CPU (two performance cores, four efficiency cores), 12 MB L2 cache, and 16 MB L3 cache.

The Apple M1 (M1 architecture) offers an 8-core CPU (four performance cores, four efficiency cores) with 16 MB L2 cache. Compared to the Apple A14 Bionic, the Apple M1 shows significantly higher computing power in single-core and multi-core scenarios, due to more performance cores and optimized architecture.

The Apple M1 is also superior in gaming scenarios, thanks to a more powerful integrated graphics unit (Apple M1 (8 Core)) and higher memory bandwidth (68 GB/s vs. 34 GB/s of the Apple A14 Bionic (Apple A14)). M1 devices enable longer peak performance through better cooling.

The A14 Bionic is optimized for energy-efficient mobile environments. The M1 is designed for higher, sustained computing power in devices with larger cooling capacities. A direct price comparison is not possible. In the context of their devices, the M1 offers an excellent price-performance ratio for desktop-like productivity.

The A14 Bionic delivers outstanding performance per watt for its mobile category. The Apple M1 is also equipped with PCIe 4.0.
