Apple A13 Bionic vs Apple M3

Last updated:
The Apple A13 Bionic, introduced in 2019, is a 7nm System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for mobile devices like iPhones, optimized for efficiency.

Its A13 (Lightning / Thunder) architecture includes performance and efficiency cores, 8 MB of Level 2 cache, and a maximum memory bandwidth of 34 GB/s. The Apple M3, introduced in 2023, is a 3nm processor for Apple Macs (desktops and laptops) with the M3 architecture.

It offers 20 MB of Level 2 cache, 102 GB/s memory bandwidth, and supports PCIe 4.0. In terms of performance, the Apple M3 significantly outperforms the Apple A13 Bionic in single-core and multi-core scenarios. For single-core performance, the Apple M3 demonstrates significantly faster execution, while its multi-core architecture enables noticeably higher parallel processing capability for demanding tasks.

In gaming scenarios too, the Apple M3 clearly surpasses the Apple A13 Bionic thanks to its more powerful integrated graphics (Apple M3 (10 Core)) and higher memory bandwidth, leading to smoother frame rates. The Apple A13 Bionic is designed for extremely low power consumption in mobile devices.

The Apple M3 delivers significantly higher performance while still maintaining very good energy efficiency, supported by its 3nm manufacturing process. The price-performance ratio of the Apple A13 Bionic is good in older, more affordable mobile devices, whereas the Apple M3 offers a very good price-performance ratio in higher-priced Macs for its offered performance.

For basic mobile use, the Apple A13 Bionic is sufficient. For demanding desktop work and gaming, the Apple M3 is the clear recommendation.
