Raspberry Pi 4 B (Broadcom BCM2711) vs AMD E-450

Last updated:
The AMD E-450, introduced in 2011 for netbooks and entry-level laptops, is based on the 32 nm Zacate (Bobcat) architecture.

It features two cores and two threads, 0 MB L2 cache, 1 MB L3 cache, and an AMD Radeon HD 6320 graphics unit. Its TDP is approximately 18 watts. The maximum memory bandwidth is 11 GB/s. In contrast, the Raspberry Pi 4 B, with its Broadcom BCM2711 processor, appeared in 2019 and is aimed at hobbyists and developers for embedded systems.

It is manufactured in 28 nm, uses the Cortex-A72 architecture with four cores, four threads, and 1 MB L2 cache. The maximum memory bandwidth is 13 GB/s, and the graphics unit is the Broadcom VideoCore VI. The entire Raspberry Pi 4 B board consumes only 5 to 8 watts under load. In a performance comparison, the Broadcom BCM2711 significantly outperforms the AMD E-450 in single-core performance.

The quad-core architecture of the Broadcom BCM2711 also ensures higher multi-core performance than the dual-core AMD E-450. Neither processor is primarily designed for gaming; however, the Raspberry Pi 4 B is better suited for emulation and simple games due to its more modern Broadcom VideoCore VI graphics unit.

The Broadcom BCM2711 is also significantly more energy-efficient than the AMD E-450 with its higher TDP. The AMD E-450 is an outdated processor whose price-performance ratio is low today. The Raspberry Pi 4 B (Broadcom BCM2711), as part of a complete system, offers an excellent price-performance ratio for modern, power-saving applications and is the clearly superior choice for most current requirements.

The AMD E-450 is best suited for continuing to operate legacy systems.
