Intel Core i7-6700 vs Intel Core i7-14700

Last updated:
The Intel Core i7-6700, based on the Skylake S architecture, was introduced in the third quarter of 2015 as a mainstream processor for desktop systems.

It was aimed at users for everyday tasks and light gaming. The Intel Core i7-14700, part of the Raptor Lake S Refresh generation, was released at the end of 2023 and targets high-end desktops for demanding applications and modern games.

The Intel Core i7-6700 is manufactured using a 14nm process and features 4 cores and 8 threads. Its 8 MB of Level 3 Cache and PCIe 3.0 support were contemporary at the time of its release. In contrast, the Intel Core i7-14700 is based on the 10nm process (Intel 7) and offers a hybrid architecture with 20 cores (8 performance cores, 12 efficiency cores) and 28 threads.

It is equipped with 33 MB of Level 3 Cache and PCIe 5.0, which enables a significantly higher data throughput rate. The maximum memory bandwidth is 34 GB/s for the Intel Core i7-6700 and 90 GB/s for the Intel Core i7-14700. In terms of single-core performance, the Intel Core i7-14700 surpasses the Intel Core i7-6700 by a significant margin.

This results in considerably faster execution of applications that primarily utilize a single core. The multi-core performance of the Intel Core i7-14700 is also many times higher than that of the Intel Core i7-6700, making it significantly superior for multitasking and computationally intensive tasks.

For gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i7-14700 is the superior choice. Its modern architecture, higher clock frequencies, and greater number of performance cores enable significantly higher frame rates and a smoother gaming experience in current titles. The Intel Core i7-6700 is hardly suitable for modern gaming anymore; its integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 can only meet basic requirements, while the Intel UHD Graphics 770 of the newer model is slightly more powerful.

Regarding power consumption, the Intel Core i7-6700 has a moderate TDP, which translates to lower energy requirements and simpler cooling solutions. The Intel Core i7-14700, however, has a significantly higher TDP and requires a powerful cooling solution under load to achieve its optimal performance, leading to higher energy consumption.

On the used market, the Intel Core i7-6700 is available at a very low price, making it interesting for budget systems where performance is not a high priority. The Intel Core i7-14700 is a current product in the premium segment. Despite the higher purchase price, it offers excellent value for money for demanding users seeking future-proof performance.
