Intel Core i7-2600 vs Intel Core i7-6700

The Intel Core i7-6700 supports PCIe 3.0, the Intel Core i7-2600 supports PCIe 2.0. In terms of performance, the Intel Core i7-6700 significantly outperforms the Intel Core i7-2600 in both single-core and multi-core tasks. Its more modern architecture enables higher performance per clock cycle.

This is also reflected in gaming scenarios, where the higher single-core performance and better PCIe connectivity of the Intel Core i7-6700 are more advantageous for modern graphics cards. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 of the Intel Core i7-6700 is also more powerful than the Intel HD Graphics 2000 of the Intel Core i7-2600.

Thanks to the finer manufacturing process, the Intel Core i7-6700 is more energy-efficient and tends to generate less heat than the Intel Core i7-2600. On the used market, platforms for the Intel Core i7-2600 are often very affordable. Although the Intel Core i7-6700 offers higher performance, the total costs for a platform with DDR4 memory and a suitable motherboard can be slightly higher.

For better future-proofing, higher overall performance, and gaming, the Intel Core i7-6700 is the superior choice. The Intel Core i7-2600 is a good and very cost-effective option for basic computing tasks and light to moderate use where budget is the primary concern.
