Apple A16 Bionic vs AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

Last updated:
The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is a desktop processor based on the Vermeer (Zen 3) architecture, introduced in the fourth quarter of 2020.

It targets mainstream desktop users and gamers. The Apple A16 Bionic, introduced in the third quarter of 2022, is a system-on-a-chip for high-end mobile devices, known for its high efficiency.

Manufactured using a 7 nm process, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X offers 6 cores and 12 threads, with 3 MB L2 cache and 32 MB L3 cache. It supports PCIe 4.0 for fast data transfer. The Apple A16 Bionic is manufactured using the more advanced 4 nm process and features 6 cores (2 performance, 4 efficiency cores), supplemented by 20 MB L2 cache and 24 MB L3 cache.

It integrates an Apple A16 graphics unit with 5 GPU cores. In Geekbench 6, the Apple A16 Bionic shows over 10 percent higher single-core performance than the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X. However, in the Cinebench R23 single-core test, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is significantly more powerful. For multi-core performance, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X leads in Geekbench 6 with an advantage of over 10 percent.

No comparable multi-core values for the Apple A16 Bionic are available in Cinebench R23 or 2024. For demanding PC games, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with a discrete graphics card is clearly superior, thanks to its architecture and the PCIe 4.0 standard. The Apple A16 Bionic is optimized for mobile games with its integrated graphics unit and offers very good performance there, but cannot compete with a dedicated desktop gaming setup.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X has a typical TDP of 65W and requires active cooling. It delivers consistently high performance for this. The Apple A16 Bionic is designed for extreme energy efficiency, with very low power consumption, enabling long battery life and passively cooled devices. The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is available as a single component and offers good value for money for building a desktop PC.

The Apple A16 Bionic, however, is firmly integrated into Apple devices and not available separately, making its price-performance ratio difficult to evaluate in isolation. In summary, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is recommended for desktop systems requiring high multi-core performance and gaming capabilities.

The Apple A16 Bionic is ideal for energy-efficient applications in mobile devices where high single-core performance and integrated graphics are crucial.
