Apple A13 Bionic vs Apple M4

Last updated:
The Apple A13 Bionic, introduced in late 2019, was primarily designed for iPhones and earlier iPad models.

It targeted the broad smartphone and tablet market. The Apple M4, unveiled in mid-2024, aims at more powerful iPads and future Mac devices, and is intended for professional users and demanding tasks.

The Apple A13 Bionic is manufactured using a 7 nm process and utilizes the architecture codenames A13 (Lightning / Thunder). It features 6 cores, typically split into 2 high-performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, with 8 MB of Level 2 cache. The Apple M4 is manufactured using the more advanced 3 nm process and offers an M4 architecture.

It features up to 10 cores, including both high-performance and efficiency cores, and a larger Level 2 cache of 20 MB. The Apple M4 demonstrates significantly higher single-core performance compared to the Apple A13 Bionic. In multi-core applications, the Apple M4's performance surpasses the Apple A13 Bionic by many times, which is due to the larger number and efficiency of its cores, the more modern architecture, and the significantly higher memory bandwidth of 120 GB/s compared to 34 GB/s.

In gaming scenarios, the Apple M4 offers substantially superior performance. This is due to the integrated Apple M4 (10 Core) graphics unit and the significantly higher memory bandwidth, which enables more complex graphics and smoother frame rates than the integrated graphics of the Apple A13 Bionic.

Both processors are designed for energy efficiency. The Apple M4 benefits from the 3 nm manufacturing process, which allows for higher performance at comparable power consumption or similar performance at lower power consumption than the Apple A13 Bionic (7 nm). This leads to better efficiency per watt.

These SoCs are not available separately. Devices with the Apple A13 Bionic are significantly cheaper today and offer good value for money for everyday tasks. The Apple M4 is built into premium devices and offers peak performance that justifies the higher device price for professional applications and future requirements.

The Apple A13 Bionic is a cost-effective option for everyday tasks and older devices. The Apple M4 is the choice for demanding users who need maximum performance for creative work, intense games, and future-proof applications.
