Intel Extreme Memory Profile

The Intel Extreme Memory Profile, also called Intel XMP or Intel X.M.P., defines memory settings that go beyond the JEDEC memory standard.

The JEDEC standard for DDR5 memory defines timing and memory voltage for DDR5-4800. If faster memory, such as DDR5-6000, is used, the timing and voltage must be entered manually in the BIOS or mainboard.

An Intel XMP profile can simply be loaded in the BIOS, after which all important memory parameters are then loaded automatically. The memory manufacturer must test its memory according to the XMP profile and ensure that the memory works perfectly with these timings.

In the end, however, the integrated memory controller of the processor as well as the mainboard itself also have a strong influence on the memory speed, so an XMP profile does not guarantee that it will work on the hardware used.

In 2022, AMD introduced its own standard with AMD EXPO, analogous to the Intel XMP profile, which is supported from AMD Ryzen 7000 onwards and is very similar to the Intel XMP profile. However, many AMD mainboards can also load Intel XMP profiles.
