Intel Core i7-6700 vs Intel Core i3-7100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i7-6700, based on the Skylake-S architecture, was introduced in the third quarter of 2015 as a powerful desktop processor, aimed at demanding users and gaming.

The Intel Core i3-7100, a representative of the Kaby Lake-S architecture, appeared in the first quarter of 2017 and targeted the entry-level to mid-range segment for everyday tasks.

Both CPUs were manufactured by Intel using the 14nm process and support PCIe Version 3.0. The Intel Core i7-6700 features 4 cores and 8 threads with 8 MB of Level 3 cache, which gives it high multitasking capability. The Intel Core i3-7100 is equipped with 2 cores and 4 threads, along with 3 MB of Level 3 cache, which is sufficient for basic applications.

In single-core performance, the Intel Core i7-6700 showed stronger processing. In multi-core performance, the Intel Core i7-6700 significantly outperformed the Intel Core i3-7100, as it has twice as many cores and threads. This manifested in significantly higher performance in compute-intensive tasks.

The Intel Core i3-7100 offered solid performance for less demanding applications. For gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i7-6700 is the superior choice thanks to its higher core count and better single-core performance, ensuring a smoother gaming experience. While the Intel Core i3-7100 can run games, it will reach its limits sooner with modern, CPU-intensive titles.

Both feature integrated graphics units, Intel HD Graphics 530 for the Intel Core i7-6700 and Intel HD Graphics 630 for the Intel Core i3-7100, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 34 GB/s and 38 GB/s respectively. The Intel Core i7-6700 has a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 65 Watts. The Intel Core i3-7100 is more energy-efficient with a TDP of 51 Watts, leading to lower power consumption and cooling requirements.

Both processors are primarily available on the used market. The Intel Core i7-6700 offers significantly better overall performance for its often higher price, while the Intel Core i3-7100 represents a more affordable option for basic systems, albeit with proportionally less processing power. The Intel Core i7-6700 excels with high multi-core and superior single-core performance, ideal for gaming, content creation, and demanding multitasking.

It is recommended for users who need strong processing power. The Intel Core i3-7100 is a good choice for everyday tasks, office applications, and media consumption, where lower power consumption and a more affordable price are priorities.
