Intel Core i5-5200U vs Intel Processor N100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-5200U, introduced around 2015, was aimed at thin notebooks that offered balanced performance for everyday tasks.

The newer Intel Processor N100, a processor from 2023, is designed for energy-efficient entry-level devices such as mini-PCs or educational laptops.

The i5-5200U is based on the Broadwell U architecture in a 14 nm process. The N100 uses the more modern Alder Lake N architecture and is manufactured in the more efficient 10 nm process. The N100 also offers more Level 2 (4 MB vs 0 MB) and Level 3 Cache (6 MB vs 3 MB). In computing performance, the Intel Processor N100 significantly outperforms the Intel Core i5-5200U in single-core and multi-core applications, enabling noticeably more responsive usage.

Neither processor is primarily optimized for gaming. However, thanks to its integrated Intel UHD Graphics (24 EUs, Alder Lake) and a higher maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s (compared to 26 GB/s for the i5-5200U), the N100 delivers slightly better performance in very simple games. Both CPUs are designed as energy-efficient models.

However, the Intel Processor N100 offers superior performance per watt due to its modern manufacturing process and newer architecture, ideal for fanless systems or long battery life. The i5-5200U is an outdated model that is only relevant in used devices on the current market. The N100, on the other hand, offers excellent value for money in new entry-level devices.

For basic tasks in older systems, the Intel Core i5-5200U may still suffice. For modern, energy-efficient basic systems with better overall and graphics performance, the Intel Processor N100 is the clear recommendation. It is excellent for light productivity and media consumption.
