The Intel Core i3-8100, based on the Coffee Lake S architecture, belongs to the eighth generation of Intel Core processors.

Manufactured using the modern 14 nm process, it features four cores and four threads with 6 MB L3 cache and PCIe 3.0 support. Its single-core performance is significantly higher compared to the Intel Core i5-2500, and it also considerably surpasses the older processor in multi-core performance.

This results in better performance for general tasks and gaming scenarios, where the more modern architecture and higher IPC are advantageous. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 offers more solid graphics performance. Due to the more efficient manufacturing process, lower power consumption and less heat generation are also to be expected.

The maximum memory bandwidth is 38 GB/s. On the used market, it offers good value for money for current entry-level systems. The Intel Core i5-2500, part of the second generation with Sandy Bridge S architecture, was manufactured using the 32 nm process. It also offers four cores and four threads as well as 6 MB L3 cache, but only supports PCIe 2.0.

Its single-core and multi-core performance is noticeably lower than that of the Intel Core i3-8100, making it less suitable for modern demanding applications and games. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 is only sufficient for the most basic graphics requirements. The older manufacturing process leads to higher power consumption and potentially greater heat generation compared to the newer model.

The maximum memory bandwidth is lower at 21 GB/s. On the used market, it is available very cheaply, but its performance scope is severely limited to very simple tasks.
