Intel Core i3-7100 vs Intel Core i3-7100T

Last updated:
The Intel Core i3-7100 and Intel Core i3-7100T are seventh-generation desktop processors, based on the Kaby Lake S architecture.

Both were manufactured by Intel and are aimed at users looking for a reliable processor for everyday tasks, office applications, and light multimedia use. The Intel Core i3-7100 is the standard variant, while the Intel Core i3-7100T represents a more energy-efficient version.

Both CPUs are manufactured using the 14 nm fabrication process and share the same basic architecture. They integrate an Intel HD Graphics 630 graphics unit and support PCIe Version 3.0. The Level 3 cache for both processors is 3 MB, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s. In terms of single-core and multi-core performance, both processors show very similar characteristics.

The Intel Core i3-7100 exhibits slightly better performance due to its higher clock rate, but this is barely noticeable in most applications as the differences are less than ten percent. For gaming scenarios, both processors, with their integrated Intel HD Graphics 630, offer basic graphics performance sufficient for older or less demanding titles at low settings.

They are not designed for demanding games. The Intel Core i3-7100 has a minimal advantage here due to its higher clock frequency, which, however, makes no decisive difference in practice. The main difference lies in power consumption and thermal design power (TDP). The Intel Core i3-7100T is specifically designed for lower power consumption and reduced heat generation.

This makes it an ideal choice for compact systems (Small Form Factor PCs) or applications where passive cooling or very quiet operation is a priority. The Intel Core i3-7100 has a higher TDP, leading to slightly higher power consumption and heat output, but in return allows for the somewhat higher clock rate.

Regarding price-performance ratio and market prices, both CPUs, as models of an older generation, are primarily available on the used market. Their price-performance ratio strongly depends on the specific offers. In summary, the Intel Core i3-7100 is the preferred choice for users who want slightly higher computing performance for general tasks and have no restrictions on cooling or power consumption.

The Intel Core i3-7100T, on the other hand, is excellent for systems where energy efficiency, low heat generation, and quiet operation are paramount, such as in HTPCs or mini-PCs.
