Intel Core i3-6100 vs Intel Core i3-7100T

Last updated:
The Intel Core i3-6100, based on the Skylake S architecture and manufactured using the 14 nm process, was designed as a mainstream processor for desktop computers.

It targets users who need a reliable chip for everyday office work, web browsing, and light multitasking tasks. This processor features 2 cores and 4 threads thanks to Hyper-Threading technology. It offers a 3 MB L3 cache size and supports PCIe 3.0. The maximum memory bandwidth is 34 GB/s. The integrated graphics unit, Intel HD Graphics 530, enables video playback and simple graphical applications.

In synthetic benchmarks, the Intel Core i3-6100 shows solid performance, with single-core and multi-core performance being in a similar range compared to the Intel Core i3-7100T, and the differences are not significant.

The Intel Core i3-7100T belongs to the seventh generation of Intel Core i3 processors and utilizes the Kaby Lake S architecture, also manufactured using the 14 nm process. Its design with the "T" suffix indicates optimized energy efficiency and a lower Thermal Design Power (TDP), making it ideal for energy-conscious systems and Small Form Factor (SFF) PCs.

This processor is also equipped with 2 cores and 4 threads and features a 3 MB L3 cache as well as support for PCIe 3.0. It achieves a maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s, which represents a slight increase over its predecessor. The improved integrated graphics unit, Intel HD Graphics 630, offers slightly higher graphical performance for everyday applications and media consumption.

The measured performance in benchmarks is very comparable to the Intel Core i3-6100, with no performance differences exceeding 10 percent. In the gaming sector, both processors offer very similar capabilities. Neither is designed for demanding gaming, as both belong to the Intel Core i3 class and feature integrated graphics units.

The Intel HD Graphics 630 of the Intel Core i3-7100T offers a marginal improvement over the Intel HD Graphics 530 of the Intel Core i3-6100, but both are limited to older titles or very low settings in modern games. The pure CPU performance is negligible, so the gaming experience is primarily limited by the integrated GPU and not by the CPU cores themselves.

The nomenclature of the Intel Core i3-7100T with the "T" suffix indicates a lower Thermal Design Power (TDP) compared to standard desktop processors like the Intel Core i3-6100. This makes the Intel Core i3-7100T more energy-efficient and predestines it for systems where power consumption and heat development are crucial, for example, in compact or passively cooled systems.

The Intel Core i3-6100 has a higher TDP but is also not an excessively power-hungry processor. Both processors are older models and are therefore hardly available new anymore. Their price-performance ratio on the current market is largely determined by the used market. Since the computing power of both CPUs is very similar, the choice depends more on the availability and the specific price of the respective offer.

Generally, both offered solid performance for the then entry-level and mid-range market at the time of their introduction. The Intel Core i3-6100 offers rock-solid performance for standard desktop applications. Its slightly higher clock frequency leads to minimally better benchmark results, which are hardly noticeable in practical use.

It is a good choice for general office PCs and home systems. The Intel Core i3-7100T, on the other hand, is characterized by its lower power consumption and associated lower heat development. This predestines it for energy-efficient systems, quiet builds, or compact cases. For scenarios where power consumption and cooling are a priority, the Intel Core i3-7100T is the better choice.

If these factors are less critical and a slightly higher clock frequency is preferred, the Intel Core i3-6100 can be attractive. In terms of pure computing power, both are very similar.
