Intel Core i3-540 vs Intel Core i7-870

Last updated:
The Intel Core i3-540 was released in early 2010 for the entry-level segment, while the Intel Core i7-870 appeared in late 2009 for the high-end market segment and professional users.

The Clarkdale architecture of the Intel Core i3-540 uses a 32-nanometer process with two cores and four threads. In contrast, the Intel Core i7-870 is based on the Lynnfield architecture in a 45-nanometer process and offers four cores as well as eight threads. Both models support the PCIe 2.0 standard.

The Intel Core i3-540 has an integrated graphics unit called Intel HD Graphics (Westmere) and a memory bandwidth of 17 GB/s. The Intel Core i7-870, on the other hand, offers 8 MB Level 3 cache and a bandwidth of 21 GB/s, but does not have internal graphics. In benchmarks for single-core and multi-core performance, the Intel Core i7-870 achieves a significant lead over the Intel Core i3-540.

In games, the Intel Core i7-870 is the superior choice, as the higher core count allows for more stable frame rates in computationally intensive titles. The power consumption of the Intel Core i3-540 is lower, which minimizes the requirements for the cooling system. The Intel Core i7-870 has a higher thermal design power and requires stronger cooling.

Both processors are available very cheaply on the used market. The Intel Core i3-540 is a practical solution for simple office computers. For multi-tasking and gaming, the Intel Core i7-870 is recommended due to its higher reserves, as it offers a better ratio of computing power to cost.
