The Intel Core i5-8400, based on the Coffee Lake S architecture, was introduced in 2017 and manufactured using the established 14nm process.

It features 6 physical cores and 6 threads, without Hyper-Threading, which characterizes it for multitasking of a certain generation. This processor offered a 9 MB Level 3 cache, while the Level 2 cache is 0 MB. It was aimed at the mainstream market and designed for general productivity tasks, web browsing, and light gaming.

The maximum memory bandwidth reaches 43 GB/s, and it supports the PCIe 3.0 standard. For basic graphics output, the Intel UHD Graphics 630 is integrated. In older systems with the LGA 1151 socket, it can still provide a solid foundation for everyday applications and was a popular choice in its time.

The Intel Core i3-12100, on the other hand, is based on the newer and more efficient Alder Lake S architecture and was introduced in 2022.

It is manufactured using the more advanced 10nm process, which leads to improved energy efficiency. This processor has 4 powerful cores (P-cores) and, thanks to Hyper-Threading, 8 threads. It is equipped with a 5 MB Level 2 cache and a larger 12 MB Level 3 cache, optimizing data availability. This processor targets the entry-level for gaming, more demanding productivity applications, and modern office tasks.

With a significantly higher maximum memory bandwidth of 77 GB/s and support for the future-proof PCIe 5.0 standard, it is technologically leading. The integrated graphics solution is the more powerful Intel UHD Graphics 730, which is sufficient for basic visual tasks. In terms of single-core performance, the Intel Core i3-12100 significantly outperforms the Intel Core i5-8400, with an advantage of over 35 percent in typical benchmarks.

This is primarily due to the newer architecture and the higher efficiency of the 10nm manufacturing process, which enable higher performance per clock cycle. Even in multi-core applications, the Intel Core i3-12100 shows clearly superior performance, exceeding 40 percent in some tests. This makes it better suited for modern, parallelized workloads, despite the lower core count, but thanks to effective thread doubling and architectural improvements.

For gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i3-12100 is the better choice. Its significantly higher single-core performance and improved architecture lead to more stable and higher frame rates, as well as a smoother gaming experience in most current titles. Modern games benefit greatly from high performance per clock cycle (IPC), which the Intel Core i3-12100 offers thanks to its newer generation.

Additionally, support for PCIe 5.0 enables higher bandwidth for current and future graphics cards, even if this is not yet a limiting factor for many current GPUs. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 730 is also more powerful than the Intel UHD Graphics 630, if no dedicated graphics card is present. The Intel Core i3-12100 benefits from its more advanced 10nm manufacturing process, which generally enables higher energy efficiency per performance delivered than the 14nm process of the Intel Core i5-8400.

This means that the Intel Core i3-12100 can often consume less energy for comparable or even higher performance. This results in lower operating costs over the lifespan and allows for potentially simpler and quieter system cooling, which can be particularly advantageous in compact cases. The Intel Core i3-12100 generally offers a more compelling price-performance ratio, especially considering its overall performance and future-proof technology.

Although the Intel Core i5-8400 might be available at a lower price on the used market, the Intel Core i3-12100 requires a more modern platform with the LGA 1700 socket, which can entail higher initial investments for the motherboard and RAM. Long-term, however, the Intel Core i3-12100 is the more future-proof option due to its superior performance, better efficiency, and support for newer standards.

The Intel Core i5-8400 is an acceptable option for users who want to cost-effectively upgrade an existing system with an LGA 1151 socket or for very basic office and internet tasks where performance requirements are low. However, the Intel Core i3-12100 is the clear recommendation for anyone building a new system or seeking a significant performance increase.

It is significantly superior in all performance areas, especially in gaming and overall performance, and offers a more modern, efficient, and future-oriented platform.
