After Apple surprisingly presented the normal Apple M2 processor as the first successor to the Apple M1 already in June 2022, the Apple M2 Pro and the Apple M2 Max may follow in autumn. The difference in performance compared to the basic version could be even greater this time and range from 25 to 40 percent.

In this article we describe how Apple could realize this and why the price should also go up.

During WWDC 2022 on June 6th, 2022 Apple surprisingly presented its new Apple M2 processor. This will initially be installed in a completely revised Apple MacBook Air with 13.6 inches, a even thinner form factor and new colors. Apple also updated the already known (old) Apple MacBook Pro 13.3 with touch bar.

Many leakers had counted on Apple not presenting its new second-generation M processor until the fall. But things turned out differently. And there is very likely a reason for that: the improvements in the Apple M2 are limited compared to the predecessor.

Comparison of the two processors

In the CPU comparison between the Apple M2 and the Intel Core i7-1195G7, we also compare the benchmark results of these two mobile processors in addition to the technical data.

While Apple's M2 processor is based on the ARM instruction set, the Intel Core i7-1195G7 uses the x86-64 instruction set. Apple has gradually switched its macOS operating system to ARM processors in recent years and develops the processors itself under a license from ARM.

The two mobile processors also differ greatly in terms of the technical core structure. Apple relies on a hybrid structure in which large and small CPU cores calculate together and the calculation tasks are efficiently divided. Specifically, Apple installed four CPU cores of the "Avalanche" and "Blizzard" designs in the Apple M2. This structure is also known as "big.LITTLE" and has been used in smartphone processors for several years.

The Apple M2 can score points when calculating data via artificial intelligence. The Apple processor has an AI performance of almost 16 TOPS and can perform certain tasks in the field of image and video processing very quickly.

With a cache of 20MB, the Apple M2 has 3MB more cache than the Intel Core i7-1195G7, which has a total of 17MB level 2 and 3 cache.

The Intel Core i7-1195G7, on the other hand, has four equally sized CPU cores that support Intel's Hyperthreading technology and can therefore also process 8 threads at the same time. The Intel processor does not have a module to accelerate AI requests. Intel relies on a monolithic structure of the processor, while Apple relies on a chiplet design.

The Apple M2 processor uses fast LPDDR5-6400 RAM, which is also used for the integrated graphics. With a bandwidth of 102 GB per second, the memory is twice as fast as the DDR4-3200 memory of the Intel Core i7-1195G7.
