Apple M1 vs Intel Core i5-12400F

Last updated:
The Apple M1, introduced in late 2020, is a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for Apple's Mac products, designed for efficiency and deep integration into the Apple ecosystem.

Manufactured using an advanced 5 nm process, it features 8 cores (4 performance and 4 efficiency cores) and the integrated Apple M1 (8 Core) graphics unit. It offers 16 MB of L2 cache and a maximum memory bandwidth of 68 GB/s. In benchmarks, the Apple M1 shows strong single-core performance, comparable to that of the Intel Core i5-12400F.

For multi-core applications, it delivers solid performance but falls behind the Intel processor in some scenarios. For gaming, it is primarily designed for the macOS ecosystem and can handle casual gaming well, but it reaches its limits with graphically demanding titles or game selection. Known for its high energy efficiency, the Apple M1 has significantly lower power consumption and heat generation, enabling very quiet operation.

As an integral part of Apple devices, it is not available separately. It is excellent for users who value a seamless Apple experience, high efficiency, and creative applications. The Intel Core i5-12400F, introduced in early 2022, is based on the Alder Lake S architecture and targets the mainstream desktop PC market, ideal for gaming and productivity.

It is manufactured using a 10 nm process (Intel 7) and offers 6 performance cores that can handle 12 threads. It features 8 MB of L2 cache and 18 MB of L3 cache, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 77 GB/s. The CPU supports PCIe 5.0. In benchmarks, the Intel Core i5-12400F significantly outperforms the Apple M1 in multi-core scenarios, while single-core performance is comparable.

Without an integrated graphics unit, the Intel Core i5-12400F requires a dedicated GPU. In combination with this, it offers excellent gaming performance for modern titles. With a base TDP of 65W and a maximum of 117W in Turbo mode, it requires more cooling and consumes more energy compared to the Apple M1.

As a separate processor, the Intel Core i5-12400F offers very good value for money for PC builders. This processor is the better choice for gamers, PC enthusiasts, and users seeking flexibility, broad software compatibility, and high multi-thread performance.
