Apple M1 vs Apple M1 Pro (8-CPU)

Last updated:
The Apple M1, introduced in late 2020, targets the mainstream market for energy-efficient devices like MacBook Air and Mac mini.

The Apple M1 Pro (8-CPU), released in late 2021, targets professional users with higher performance needs in MacBook Pro models. Both CPUs are manufactured using the 5 nm process and utilize the M1 architecture. The Apple M1 features an 8-core CPU (four high-performance, four efficiency cores) with 16 MB Level 2 cache and 68 GB/s memory bandwidth.

The Apple M1 Pro (8-CPU) also has an 8-core CPU, but with a core configuration optimized for peak performance, 24 MB Level 2 cache, and a significantly higher memory bandwidth of 102 GB/s.

In single-core benchmarks, both processors show almost identical performance. However, in multi-core applications, the Apple M1 Pro (8-CPU) surpasses the Apple M1 with over twenty percent higher performance. In gaming scenarios, the Apple M1 Pro (8-CPU) is also significantly superior to the Apple M1 (8 Core) thanks to its more powerful Apple M1 Pro (14 Core) graphics unit.

The Apple M1 is characterized by outstanding energy efficiency, ideal for long battery life. The Apple M1 Pro (8-CPU) offers higher absolute performance, coupled with a proportionally higher energy requirement under load, but remains efficient for its class. In terms of price, Apple M1 devices are more accessible and offer excellent value for money for everyday tasks.

Apple M1 Pro (8-CPU) devices are more expensive but are the better choice for professional workflows.
