AMD FX-8350 vs Intel Core i5-10400

The AMD FX-8350, introduced in 2012, was based on the Vishera architecture and manufactured using a 32 nm process with 8 cores and 8 threads.

It offered 8 MB of Level 3 Cache and 30 GB/s memory bandwidth. The Intel Core i5-10400, released in 2020 with the Comet Lake S architecture, uses a 14 nm process for its 6 cores and 12 threads.

It features 12 MB of Level 3 Cache, PCIe 3.0, 43 GB/s memory bandwidth, and Intel UHD Graphics 630. In single-core and multi-core performance, the Intel Core i5-10400 significantly outperforms the AMD FX-8350. The newer architecture and manufacturing of the Intel processor enable over 10 percent higher performance in all relevant benchmarks.

Especially in gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i5-10400 is the clear better choice due to its superior single-core performance and higher IPC (Instructions per Cycle), leading to smoother gaming experiences. The AMD FX-8350 cannot keep up here. Thanks to its 14 nm manufacturing process, the Intel Core i5-10400 is more energy-efficient and has a lower Thermal Design Power (TDP) than the 32 nm manufactured AMD FX-8350 with its higher power consumption.

The price/performance ratio of the AMD FX-8350 is only relevant today for used legacy systems. The Intel Core i5-10400 offered a good ratio upon its introduction and remains a solid solution for general applications and gaming when peak performance is not required.
