Intel Processor N150 vs Intel Core i3-8100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i3-8100 was introduced in the fourth quarter of 2017 and is aimed at mainstream desktop users for everyday tasks such as office applications and web browsing.

The Intel Processor N150, which came onto the market in the first quarter of 2023, targets the entry-level segment and low-power systems, ideal for compact devices and basic computing tasks where energy efficiency is a priority.

The Intel Core i3-8100 is based on the Coffee Lake S architecture and is manufactured using a 14 nm process. It is an established processor for classic desktop systems with PCIe Version 3.0 and 6 MB Level 3 Cache. The Intel Processor N150, on the other hand, uses the Twin Lake architecture and benefits from a more modern 7 nm manufacturing process, which enables higher transistor density and efficiency.

It also offers PCIe Version 3.0, but with 4 MB Level 2 Cache and 6 MB Level 3 Cache. In terms of single-core performance, both processors show comparable values. However, in multi-core performance, the Intel Core i3-8100 achieves significantly higher performance, which makes it more advantageous for tasks with several simultaneous processes.

The Intel Processor N150 offers lower performance here. Neither the Intel Core i3-8100 nor the Intel Processor N150 are designed for demanding gaming. The Intel Core i3-8100 features Intel UHD Graphics 630. The Intel Processor N150 is equipped with Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake), which benefits from a newer architecture and can offer advantages in very light games or during video playback.

For serious gaming, a dedicated graphics card is required in both cases. The maximum memory bandwidth for both processors is 38 GB/s. The Intel Core i3-8100 is designed as a standard desktop processor, which typically means higher power consumption and heat output. The Intel Processor N150, on the other hand, belongs to a processor family designed for maximum energy efficiency.

This results in significantly lower power consumption and less heat generation, making it ideal for fanless or passively cooled systems. Both processors serve different market segments. The Intel Core i3-8100 is a processor for an older platform and is primarily available on the used market or in existing systems.

The total cost for such a platform can vary. The Intel Processor N150 is a newer chip, often soldered onto inexpensive motherboards for compact and low-power systems. Its value lies in its modern efficiency and suitability for specialized applications with low power requirements. The Intel Core i3-8100 is the better choice when higher overall CPU performance is required for everyday, but also somewhat more demanding desktop applications, and energy consumption plays a minor role.

The Intel Processor N150 is excellently suited for applications that require maximum energy efficiency, low heat generation, and a compact design, such as in thin clients, NAS systems, or mini PCs for basic multimedia and office tasks.
