Intel Pentium Silver J5040 vs Intel Processor N97

Last updated:
The Intel Pentium Silver J5040 is a processor based on the Gemini Lake architecture, designed for economical desktop systems and embedded applications with basic computing tasks.

It is manufactured using the 14 nm process and features four cores and four threads with a 4 MB L3 cache. Connectivity is provided via PCIe 2.0. Its integrated Intel UHD Graphics 605 is designed for everyday graphics requirements and offers a maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s. In performance tests, it shows basic computing power.

Its TDP is typically 10 Watts, which makes it very energy-efficient. It is suitable for very light tasks such as web browsing or word processing, but offers significantly lower performance compared to the N97 and is unsuitable for gaming. The Intel Processor N97 is based on the newer Alder Lake N architecture and is also aimed at energy-efficient systems such as mini-PCs, but offers a more modern foundation for improved performance.

Manufactured using the more advanced 10 nm process, it has four cores and four threads, equipped with 4 MB L2 cache and 6 MB L3 cache, as well as support for PCIe 3.0. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics with 24 EUs (Alder Lake) surpasses that of the J5040 and also offers 38 GB/s memory bandwidth. In computing performance tests, the Intel Processor N97 significantly outperforms the J5040 in single and multi-core tasks, often by more than double.

Its TDP is typically 12 Watts, which means better efficiency per Watt given the significantly higher performance. For most modern use cases and a better price-performance ratio, it is clearly the better choice, but it also offers only basic gaming capabilities.
