Intel Core i9-9900 vs Intel Core i7-9700

The Intel Core i9-9900 and Intel Core i7-9700 are both 9th generation desktop processors based on the Coffee Lake S Refresh architecture.

The Intel Core i9-9900 is aimed at demanding users who require high multi-core performance for content creation, video editing, and complex multitasking. The Intel Core i7-9700 is primarily designed for gaming and general productivity, where it delivers solid performance.

Both CPUs are manufactured using a 14nm process and utilize PCIe 3.0 with a maximum memory bandwidth of 43 GB/s. The Intel Core i9-9900 features 8 cores and 16 threads, supported by 16 MB of Level 3 Cache. The Intel Core i7-9700 also has 8 cores, but only 8 threads and a Level 3 Cache of 12 MB.

Both are equipped with the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630. In single-core performance, both processors show very similar results, with differences in benchmarks being less than ten percent. For multi-core performance, the Intel Core i9-9900 offers a clear advantage in applications that benefit from many threads, thanks to its Hyper-Threading capability and larger cache.

The Intel Core i7-9700 delivers good, but lower performance here. For gaming scenarios, the performance differences between the two processors are usually small. Since games often benefit more from single-core performance and high clock speeds than from a very high thread count, both CPUs offer comparable gaming performance.

The additional threads of the Intel Core i9-9900 bring only minimal advantages in most current games. Regarding power consumption and thermal design power (TDP), both processors are specified at 65 watts. Under full load, especially with heavy utilization of all cores and threads, the Intel Core i9-9900 might have slightly higher power requirements due to its higher thread count and larger cache.

The price-performance ratio heavily depends on the intended use. For gaming or everyday tasks where the multi-core performance of the Intel Core i9-9900 is not fully utilized, the Intel Core i7-9700 generally offers a better price-performance ratio. For professional users who regularly benefit from superior multi-core performance, the Intel Core i9-9900 justifies its higher price.
