Intel Core i7-8700K vs AMD Ryzen 7 7700

Last updated:
The Intel Core i7-8700K, introduced in late 2017 with the Coffee Lake S architecture, was aimed at enthusiasts and gamers.

It is manufactured using a 14 nm process and features 6 cores and 12 threads, equipped with 12 MB of L3 cache. This processor offers integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 and supports PCIe 3.0. Its maximum memory bandwidth is 43 GB/s. In terms of performance, for both single-core and multi-core applications, it lags significantly behind its more modern counterpart.

Its TDP is 95W. As an older model, it can often be found cheaper on the used market but requires an older platform. The AMD Ryzen 7 7700, unveiled in early 2023 with the Raphael (Zen 4) architecture, targets the mainstream to high-end market, offering balanced performance for gaming and productivity.

It benefits from a more advanced 5 nm manufacturing process and provides 8 cores and 16 threads, equipped with 8 MB of L2 cache and 32 MB of L3 cache. This processor features integrated AMD Radeon Graphics (Raphael) and supports the newer PCIe 5.0. Its maximum memory bandwidth is significantly higher at 83 GB/s.

It delivers significantly superior single-core and multi-core performance. With a TDP of 65W, it is much more energy-efficient. As a newer CPU for the AM5 platform, it requires a higher initial investment but offers a future-proof foundation. For gaming scenarios, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700 offers clearly superior performance, attributable to the Zen 4 architecture and IPC improvements.

The Intel Core i7-8700K was a good choice for games in its time but can no longer keep up with the efficiency and demands of modern titles. The price-performance ratio of the AMD Ryzen 7 7700 is better in the long run due to its superior performance and future-proof platform.

The Intel Core i7-8700K is an option for existing LGA 1151 systems if the budget is limited or only low performance requirements exist. The AMD Ryzen 7 7700 is the significantly more powerful and future-proof choice for new builds and demanding applications.
