Intel Core i7-7600U vs Intel Processor N100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i7-7600U, based on the Kaby Lake U architecture, was introduced in early 2017 for ultrabooks and energy-efficient notebooks to provide balanced performance for general tasks.

The Intel Processor N100 is a newer processor from the Alder Lake N family, launched in early 2023. It targets energy-efficient, cost-effective devices such as mini-PCs and entry-level notebooks.

The Intel Core i7-7600U is manufactured using a 14 nm process and features 2 cores and 4 threads. The Intel Processor N100 benefits from a more modern 10 nm manufacturing process and offers 4 cores and 4 threads based on the efficient cores of the Alder Lake architecture, promising improved energy efficiency.

The Level 3 cache size is 4 MB for the Intel Core i7-7600U and 6 MB for the Intel Processor N100. In benchmarks, the Intel Processor N100 shows noticeably higher single-core performance in Cinebench R23 and significantly superior multi-core performance in Geekbench 6 compared to the Intel Core i7-7600U.

In Geekbench 6, the single-core results of both processors are comparable. The Intel Processor N100 is therefore significantly more powerful for applications that benefit from multiple cores. Neither processor is designed for demanding gaming. The Intel Core i7-7600U uses Intel HD Graphics 620, while the Intel Processor N100 is equipped with the more modern Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake).

The latter offers better performance in very light or older games due to its newer architecture and a slightly higher maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s (compared to 34 GB/s). The Intel Core i7-7600U has a typical TDP of about 15W. The Intel Processor N100 is designed for maximum energy efficiency and has a significantly lower TDP, often around 6W.

This means that the Intel Processor N100 consumes considerably less power and generates less heat, making it ideal for fanless or passively cooled systems. The Intel Core i7-7600U is an older processor primarily found in used systems. The Intel Processor N100 is available in new, affordable mini-PCs and entry-level laptops.

Given its improved performance and significantly higher energy efficiency, the Intel Processor N100 offers superior value for money in new systems for its intended use. The Intel Core i7-7600U is suitable for basic productivity tasks on existing older systems. The Intel Processor N100 is the better choice for new, energy-efficient systems that require improved multi-core performance for everyday tasks, media playback, and light office work in a compact form factor.
