Intel Core i7-5960X vs Intel Core i7-6950X

Last updated:
The Intel Core i7-5960X, based on the Haswell-E architecture, was introduced in the third quarter of 2014 and targeted enthusiasts and content creators who required high multi-thread performance.

This Intel processor was manufactured using a 22 nm process and features 8 cores and 16 threads. Its solid single-core performance and strong multi-core performance, supported by 20 MB L3 cache and 68 GB/s maximum memory bandwidth, were characteristic. In gaming, it offered a good foundation, while its TDP was 140W.

On the used market, it is often available at a lower price, making it a cost-effective option for specific multi-thread tasks. The Intel Core i7-6950X, an Intel processor based on the Broadwell-E architecture, was launched in the second quarter of 2016 and also aimed at the high-end desktop segment.

It is manufactured using a more advanced 14 nm process and offers 10 cores and 20 threads. Its single-core performance is noticeably better, over 10 percent higher than its predecessor in specific benchmarks. Multi-core performance is generally superior, although in some benchmarks the difference is under 10 percent.

With 25 MB L3 cache and 77 GB/s maximum memory bandwidth, it also offers better specifications. Despite the higher core count, it maintains a TDP of 140W, signaling improved energy efficiency. In gaming, it offers a slight advantage due to increased single-core performance. On the used market, it is more expensive but delivers higher overall performance.
