Intel Core i5-8500 vs Intel Celeron J1900

Last updated:
The Intel Celeron J1900, released in 2013, targeted energy-efficient, cost-effective systems like thin clients.

It is based on the 22 nm Bay Trail architecture with four cores and 2 MB Level 3 Cache. Its maximum memory bandwidth is 21 GB/s and it uses PCIe 2.0. The integrated Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail GT1) offers basic performance. Its single-core and multi-core performance is suitable for simple tasks, but very low in comparison, making it unsuitable for modern games.

Its power consumption is extremely low, ideal for passive cooling. The Intel Core i5-8500, introduced in 2018, targets mainstream desktops for productivity and light gaming.

It uses the 14 nm Coffee Lake S architecture with six cores and a 9 MB Level 3 Cache. With 43 GB/s memory bandwidth and PCIe 3.0, it offers significantly more performance. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 is noticeably more powerful. Its single-core and multi-core performance is far superior to the Celeron, making it predestined for multitasking and gaming.

It has higher power consumption and requires active cooling. For gaming, the Intel Core i5-8500 is the clear choice due to its superior computing and graphics performance. The Intel Celeron J1900 is only suitable for very undemanding applications. In terms of price-performance ratio, both offer specific value on the used market: the Intel Celeron J1900 for minimal requirements and energy efficiency, the Intel Core i5-8500 for significantly more performance in more demanding scenarios.
