Intel Core i5-7500T vs Intel Core i3-9100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-7500T, based on the Kaby Lake S architecture, was introduced in the first quarter of 2017 as a 7th generation processor.

It was primarily aimed at energy-efficient systems and compact form factors, such as mini-PCs or all-in-one devices, which require solid computing performance with low power consumption. The Intel Core i3-9100, a representative of the 9th generation and based on the Coffee Lake S Refresh architecture, was launched in the second quarter of 2019.

It targeted mainstream desktop PCs and budget builds that were intended to offer improved overall performance for everyday tasks, office applications, and light productivity software. Both processors are manufactured using Intel's 14 nm manufacturing process. The Intel Core i5-7500T is equipped with 4 physical cores and 4 threads.

The Intel Core i3-9100 also has 4 physical cores and 4 threads. Both support PCIe Version 3.0 and offer a maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s. The Level 3 cache for both models is 6 MB, with the Level 2 cache being 0 MB in each case, which indicates an efficient use of the Level 3 cache.

Regarding single-core performance, the Intel Core i3-9100 shows significantly higher computing power, exceeding that of the Intel Core i5-7500T by over 10 percent. This is primarily due to its more modern architecture and higher base and boost clock frequencies, which results in better system responsiveness.

In multi-core performance, the Intel Core i3-9100 also significantly outperforms the Intel Core i5-7500T, with an improvement of over 10 percent. This makes it noticeably faster and more efficient in applications that can utilize multiple cores efficiently. For gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i3-9100 offers better performance due to its superior single-core performance and higher clock frequencies.

Most games benefit greatly from high performance per core (IPC) and high clock speeds, which the Intel Core i3-9100 provides better. The Intel Core i5-7500T is less suitable here. Both CPUs feature integrated graphics units (Intel HD Graphics 630 for the Intel Core i5-7500T and Intel UHD Graphics 630 for the Intel Core i3-9100), which are not designed for demanding games; a dedicated graphics card is always required for a satisfactory gaming experience.

The Intel Core i5-7500T is significantly more energy-efficient than the Intel Core i3-9100, with a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 35W compared to 65W. This means that the Intel Core i5-7500T consumes considerably less power and consequently generates less heat. This characteristic makes it the preferred choice for systems where low power consumption and minimal heat generation are crucial, such as in passively cooled systems, home theater PCs, or very compact cases with limited cooling options.

Since both processors are no longer new on the market, their prices vary widely on the used market and in remaining stock. Originally, the Intel Core i3-9100 offered a better price-performance ratio for general use, as it provided higher computing power at an often comparable or only slightly higher price compared to older models like the T-series processor.

On today's used market, the price-performance ratio heavily depends on the individual offer. However, the Intel Core i3-9100 tends to be the more attractive option due to its higher performance. The Intel Core i5-7500T is an excellent choice for applications requiring very low power consumption and heat generation.

These include home theater PCs, office PCs, or systems with limited cooling space. Its performance is perfectly adequate for everyday tasks and light productivity. The Intel Core i3-9100 offers noticeably higher overall performance, both in single-core and multi-core applications. It is the better choice for users who desire a more responsive system experience, better performance in productivity software, and a more solid foundation for light gaming scenarios, even if this comes with higher power consumption.
