Intel Core i5-7500 vs Intel Processor N100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-7500, based on the Kaby Lake S architecture, was introduced in 2017 and targeted the mainstream desktop market for general productivity tasks.

It is manufactured using a 14 nm process and features 4 cores and 4 threads. This processor supports PCIe 3.0 and offers a maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s, as well as 6 MB of L3 cache. In single-core performance, the Intel Core i5-7500 shows comparable performance to the Intel Processor N100.

For multi-core applications, the Intel Core i5-7500 significantly outperforms the Intel Processor N100. With its Intel HD Graphics 630, it is not designed for demanding games. The Thermal Design Power (TDP) of the Intel Core i5-7500 is typically 65W. As an older model, it is mainly available on the used market, offering a cost-effective solution for basic to medium tasks.

The Intel Processor N100, based on the newer Alder Lake N architecture, was introduced later and targets energy-efficient, compact desktop systems, thin clients, and mini-PCs. It is manufactured using the more advanced 10 nm process and also has 4 cores and 4 threads, which are designed for efficiency.

This processor features 4 MB of L2 cache and 6 MB of L3 cache, also supports PCIe 3.0, and a maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s. The single-core performance of the Intel Processor N100 is very similar to that of the Intel Core i5-7500, while it lags behind the Intel Core i5-7500 in multi-core applications.

Equipped with Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake), it offers an integrated graphics solution that is sufficient for very light gaming and media playback, and may show slight advantages over the older Intel HD Graphics 630. A key advantage is its extremely low Thermal Design Power (TDP) of typically only 6W, which enables fanless operation.

The Intel Processor N100 is often found in pre-configured, cost-effective, and energy-efficient systems. The Intel Core i5-7500 is the better choice for users who need slightly higher multi-core performance for general office tasks or light workloads and are willing to accept higher power consumption.

It is often a cost-effective option on the used market. The Intel Processor N100 is ideal for users who prioritize maximum energy efficiency, quiet operation, and a compact design. It is excellent for thin clients, home servers, media centers, or very basic desktop tasks where absolute processing power is secondary.
