Intel Core i5-6500 vs Intel Core i3-12100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-6500 was released as a mid-range processor based on the Skylake S architecture, while the Intel Core i3-12100 is a newer model of the Alder Lake S generation for price-conscious users.

Manufactured using the 14 nm process, the Intel Core i5-6500 has four cores and four threads. In contrast, the Intel Core i3-12100 uses the 10 nm process and offers a total of eight threads with the same core count through Hyper-Threading. In single-core and multi-core performance benchmarks, the Intel Core i3-12100 is significantly ahead of the comparison model.

This additional performance results from architectural improvements and higher efficiency per clock cycle. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 of the older model is surpassed in performance by the Intel UHD Graphics 730 of the newer processor. In gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i3-12100 ensures smoother rendering, as modern applications benefit from the higher thread count and the 12 MB Level 3 cache.

In terms of power consumption, both are specified with a thermal design power of 65 watts, but the Intel Core i3-12100 works more efficiently during computationally intensive tasks. With a memory bandwidth of 77 GB/s and PCIe 5.0, it is technically more advanced than the Intel Core i5-6500 with 34 GB/s and PCIe 3.0.

The price-performance ratio clearly favors the Intel Core i3-12100, as it offers a much higher performance for the requirements of modern software. While the Intel Core i5-6500 is sufficient for simple office tasks, the Intel Core i3-12100 is the recommendation for versatile and modern systems.
