Intel Core i5-6400T vs Intel Processor N100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-6400T, based on the Skylake S architecture, was introduced by Intel in the third quarter of 2015.

It is aimed at energy-efficient desktop systems and compact PCs where a balanced ratio of computing power and low power consumption is required. Manufacturing takes place in a 14 nm process, and the processor has 4 cores and 4 threads. The Intel HD Graphics 530 is used as the internal graphics unit, which meets basic graphics requirements.

The maximum memory bandwidth is 34 GB/s, supported via PCIe 3.0. The Intel Processor N100, based on the newer Alder Lake N architecture, was launched by Intel in the first quarter of 2023.

It targets entry-level PCs, mini-PCs, and thin clients, where maximum energy efficiency and good basic performance for everyday tasks are paramount. It is manufactured in a more advanced 10 nm process and also offers 4 cores and 4 threads. The integrated graphics solution is the Intel UHD Graphics with 24 EUs (Alder Lake).

The maximum memory bandwidth is 38 GB/s and is connected via PCIe 3.0. When comparing computing performance, the Intel Processor N100 shows significantly higher performance in single-core applications, exceeding that of the Intel Core i5-6400T by over 10 percent. The Intel Processor N100 also offers a noticeable increase in performance in multi-core applications.

This is due to the more modern architecture and optimizations in the manufacturing process. Both processors are only very limitedly suitable for gaming and primarily for older or graphically undemanding titles. However, the Intel Processor N100 offers improved graphics performance with its newer Intel UHD Graphics (Alder Lake) compared to the Intel HD Graphics 530 of the Intel Core i5-6400T.

Nevertheless, both solutions are not designed for demanding gaming scenarios, as they lack dedicated graphics performance. Regarding power consumption, the Intel Processor N100 is optimized for extremely low energy consumption due to its modern architecture and design. Although the Intel Core i5-6400T is a T-series variant with reduced consumption, it cannot achieve the efficiency of the Intel Processor N100.

This makes the Intel Processor N100 the better choice for fanless systems or applications where power consumption is critical. Evaluating the price-performance ratio is difficult without current market prices. The Intel Core i5-6400T is an older processor, mostly only found on the used market or in older systems.

The Intel Processor N100 is often offered as an integral part of new, compact, and energy-efficient systems and provides a more modern platform at a typically low system price. In summary, the Intel Core i5-6400T offers solid basic performance for older or less demanding desktop applications in energy-optimized systems.

The Intel Processor N100, on the other hand, impresses with its significantly improved single-core and multi-core performance, as well as its superior energy efficiency and more modern integrated graphics. For modern everyday tasks, media consumption, and office work in an energy-conscious environment, the Intel Processor N100 is clearly the better choice.

The Intel Core i5-6400T might still be relevant for continued operation of existing, older systems.
