Intel Core i5-3210M vs Intel Processor N100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-3210M, introduced in the second quarter of 2012, was a mainstream processor for notebooks of the third Intel Core generation.

It is based on the Ivy Bridge H architecture and was manufactured using the 22 nm process. This processor features 2 cores and 4 threads thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, complemented by 3 MB of L3 cache. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 enables basic graphics output for office applications and simple multimedia use.

Power consumption is in the typical range for mobile CPUs of its era. Today, the processor is only available in older used devices and represents an earlier generation of mobile processors designed for simple everyday tasks. The Intel Processor N100, introduced in the first quarter of 2023, is aimed at energy-efficient entry-level devices such as laptops, mini-PCs, and embedded systems.

It is based on the modern Alder Lake N architecture and is manufactured using the 10 nm process. This chip features 4 efficiency cores and 4 threads, equipped with 4 MB of L2 cache and 6 MB of L3 cache. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake) offers contemporary graphics performance sufficient for casual gaming and smooth video playback.

Its extremely low TDP makes it ideal for passive cooling systems and long battery life. The processor is installed in current new devices that require a good performance-per-watt ratio. Manufacturing Process and Cores/Threads The Intel Core i5-3210M uses the 22 nm manufacturing process and the Ivy Bridge H architecture with 2 cores and 4 threads, as well as 3 MB of L3 cache.

In contrast, the Intel Processor N100 is manufactured using the more advanced 10 nm manufacturing process (Alder Lake N architecture) and offers 4 efficiency cores and 4 threads with 4 MB of L2 cache and 6 MB of L3 cache. The N100 benefits here from a significantly more modern core architecture and a finer manufacturing process.

Single-Core and Multi-Core Performance in Benchmarks When comparing single-core performance, the Intel Processor N100 shows significantly higher performance, exceeding that of the Intel Core i5-3210M by more than double. In multi-core performance, the Intel Processor N100 is also clearly ahead, offering noticeably better performance for parallel tasks.

This underscores the technological progress between the generations. Performance in Gaming Scenarios Regarding gaming scenarios, the Intel Processor N100, with its Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake), offers fundamentally higher graphics performance than the Intel HD Graphics 4000 of the Intel Core i5-3210M.

While neither processor is designed for demanding modern games, the N100 allows for smoother rendering in casual games or older titles and better performance in video playback. Power Consumption and Thermal Design Power (TDP) The Intel Processor N100 is designed for extreme energy efficiency and has a very low TDP, making it ideal for fanless devices and long battery life.

The Intel Core i5-3210M has a higher typical power consumption for a mobile processor of its generation, which translates into lower efficiency and potentially higher cooling requirements. Price/Performance Ratio and Current Market Prices As an outdated processor, the Intel Core i5-3210M is no longer available new and can only be found in used laptops.

Its price/performance ratio is therefore only relevant in the context of very old hardware. The Intel Processor N100, on the other hand, is built into new, affordable devices and offers an excellent performance-per-watt ratio for basic and energy-efficient applications. Summary and Recommendation The Intel Core i5-3210M was a solid processor in its time, but is now technologically obsolete.

The Intel Processor N100, however, offers significantly higher computing and graphics performance with significantly lower power consumption, thanks to its modern architecture and manufacturing. For current applications and a balanced performance-per-watt ratio, the Intel Processor N100 is the clear recommendation.

If it's about maintaining a very old system for extremely simple tasks, the i5-3210M might still play a role.
