The Intel Core i5-2400, introduced in the first quarter of 2011, was a mainstream desktop processor (architecture codename Sandy Bridge S, 32 nm) with 4 cores and 4 threads, and 6 MB of Level 3 Cache.

Its integrated graphics unit is the Intel HD Graphics 2000. The Thermal Design Power (TDP) is 95 watts. Today, it is mainly found on the used market. The Intel Processor N100, introduced in the first quarter of 2023, targets energy-efficient mini-PCs and entry-level desktops (architecture codename Alder Lake N, 10 nm).

It features 4 efficiency cores and 4 threads, 4 MB of Level 2 Cache, and 6 MB of Level 3 Cache. The integrated graphics is the Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake). Its TDP is only 6 watts, and it is available in new, compact systems. In single-core performance, the Intel Processor N100 significantly outperforms the Intel Core i5-2400, with a lead of over 100 percent in corresponding benchmarks.

In multi-core performance, the Intel Processor N100 is also clearly superior with over 30 percent more power. For gaming, the Intel Processor N100 is the better choice thanks to its more powerful integrated graphics and a memory throughput rate of 38 GB/s (vs. 21 GB/s for the Intel Core i5-2400), although neither is designed for demanding gaming.

The extremely low TDP of the Intel Processor N100 enables passively cooled systems and significantly reduces operating costs compared to the 95-watt Intel Core i5-2400. The price-performance ratio of the Intel Processor N100 for modern, economical applications is excellent.

In summary, the Intel Processor N100 offers clear advantages in all performance and efficiency areas over the outdated Intel Core i5-2400. It is the recommended choice for modern, energy-efficient systems for office, web, and media playback. The Intel Core i5-2400 is only relevant for upgrading very old, compatible systems.
