Intel Core i3-8100 vs Intel Processor N100

Last updated:
The Intel Core i3-8100, based on the Coffee Lake S architecture and manufactured using the 14 nm process, is an Intel desktop processor.

It was designed for mainstream desktop systems that require solid performance for everyday tasks. In contrast, the Intel Processor N100, a more modern Intel processor with Alder Lake N architecture and 10 nm manufacturing, is primarily designed for energy-efficient mini-PCs and thin clients.

The Intel Core i3-8100 features 4 cores and 4 threads. The Intel Processor N100 also offers 4 cores and 4 threads, but based on the more efficient Alder Lake N architecture. In older benchmarks, the Intel Core i3-8100 shows a tendentially higher single-core and multi-core performance.

Its architecture enables solid performance for applications that benefit from higher clock speeds. The Intel Processor N100, although architecturally more modern and capable of running newer benchmarks like Cinebench 2024, lags behind the Intel Core i3-8100 in older single-core and multi-core performance tests, with differences being significant, especially in multi-core performance.

Both processors are equipped with integrated graphics units (Intel UHD Graphics 630 for the Intel Core i3-8100 and Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake) for the Intel Processor N100), which are only suitable for very light gaming requirements or older titles at minimal settings.

The limited maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s for both CPUs is a limiting factor. The Intel Core i3-8100 has a higher thermal design power (TDP) of typically 65 watts, which requires adequate cooling. The Intel Processor N100, on the other hand, is characterized by a very low TDP, typically 6 watts, making it ideal for passively cooled and energy-efficient systems.

The Intel Core i3-8100 is an older model mainly available on the used market. The Intel Processor N100 is newer and often offered in complete systems, with its price-performance ratio strongly tied to its energy efficiency and modern platform. The Intel Core i3-8100 offers higher computing power for general desktop tasks but is more energy-intensive.

It is suitable for applications where raw performance is more important than energy efficiency. The Intel Processor N100 scores with high energy efficiency and modern architecture, ideal for silent mini-PCs, media centers, or thin clients, where low power consumption and heat generation are priorities.
