The Intel Core2 Duo E8400 (introduced 2008) was a mainstream desktop processor. The Intel Processor N100 (a newer model) targets energy-efficient, cost-effective systems like mini PCs.

The Intel Core2 Duo E8400 uses the Wolfdale (Penryn) architecture (45 nm, 2 Cores/2 Threads, 6 MB L2 Cache). The Intel Processor N100 is based on the Alder Lake N architecture (10 nm, 4 Cores/4 Threads, 4 MB L2 Cache, 6 MB L3 Cache). The single-core and multi-core performance of the Intel Processor N100 significantly surpasses the Intel Core2 Duo E8400 thanks to its newer architecture and more cores.

Neither is primarily designed for gaming. The Intel Core2 Duo E8400 requires a dedicated graphics card and is outdated for modern games. The Intel Processor N100 integrates an Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake) for basic multimedia and very light gaming, supported by PCIe 3.0.

The Intel Processor N100 is characterized by extremely low power consumption; the Intel Core2 Duo E8400 has a significantly higher demand. Memory bandwidth is 38 GB/s for the Intel Processor N100 and 21 GB/s for the Intel Core2 Duo E8400. The Intel Core2 Duo E8400 is used and inexpensive with low performance.

The Intel Processor N100 is a cost-effective, modern solution for good performance in simple computing tasks and energy-efficient applications. For retro systems, the Intel Core2 Duo E8400 is an option. For all modern applications such as web browsing, office, and multimedia, the energy-efficient Intel Processor N100 is the superior choice.
