Apple M1 vs Apple M3 Max (16-CPU 40-GPU)

Last updated:
The Apple M1 processor, a pioneer in Apple's own silicon architecture, is aimed at a broad user base for everyday and creative applications.

Manufactured using the 5 nm process, it integrates an 8-core CPU and an Apple M1 (8 Core) graphics unit. It features 16 MB of Level 2 cache and a memory bandwidth of 68 GB/s. The Apple M3 Max (16-CPU 40-GPU) processor targets demanding professional users who require the highest performance for complex workflows.

It is manufactured using the more advanced 3 nm process and features a 16-core CPU and a powerful Apple M3 Max (40 Core) graphics unit. With 36 MB of Level 2 cache and 410 GB/s memory bandwidth, it also enables good performance in AI applications. In CPU performance comparison, the Apple M1 shows higher single-core performance in a specific benchmark.

However, the Apple M3 Max delivers significantly higher performance in most other single-core tests and consistently in multi-core applications, ideal for compute-intensive tasks. For gaming and graphics-intensive scenarios, the Apple M3 Max offers significantly better performance than the Apple M1, thanks to its superior 40-core GPU and considerably higher memory bandwidth.

Both processors are energy-efficient. The Apple M3 Max benefits from the 3 nm process for improved efficiency, while the M1 offers balanced performance. The Apple M1 provides good value for money for the mainstream. The Apple M3 Max is a premium product for professional requirements.
