Apple M1 vs Apple M2 Max (30-GPU)

Last updated:
The Apple M1, introduced in late 2020, targets a broad audience for everyday tasks and light professional use, with an emphasis on efficiency.

The Apple M2 Max (30-GPU), part of the M2 family, targets demanding professional users, content creators, and users with high graphics and processing power needs.

Both processors are manufactured by Apple using a 5 nm process. The Apple M1 (codename M1) features an 8-core CPU and an Apple M1 (8 Core) graphics unit with 16 MB Level 2 cache and 68 GB/s memory bandwidth. The Apple M2 Max (30-GPU) (codename M2) offers a 12-core CPU and a more powerful Apple M2 Max (30 Core) graphics unit with 36 MB Level 2 cache and 410 GB/s memory bandwidth.

Neither processor utilizes a Level 3 cache. In single-core performance, the Apple M2 Max (30-GPU) shows a noticeably higher performance in some tests. In multi-core performance, however, the Apple M2 Max (30-GPU) significantly outperforms the Apple M1, which is due to the higher core count and architectural improvements.

For gaming scenarios, the Apple M2 Max (30-GPU) offers considerably better performance. Its more powerful 30-core graphics unit and superior memory bandwidth enable a smoother gaming experience at higher settings. The high memory bandwidth also contributes to good AI performance. The Apple M1 is characterized by high energy efficiency.

The Apple M2 Max (30-GPU) also delivers good efficiency for its significantly higher performance, but requires more energy and more robust cooling for peak loads. The Apple M1 offers excellent value for money for everyday and light professional tasks. The Apple M2 Max (30-GPU) is positioned in premium devices, its price reflecting the high-end performance for demanding workloads.
